RIO RAPIDS NORTHERN YOUTH SOCCER ACADEMY PROGRAMS (U7/8 - U9/10)

Rio Rapids Northern Soccer Club is excited to present our new Academy Program. The Rio Rapids Northern Youth  Soccer Academy is an opportunity for our young players, who are passionate about the game of soccer, to develop their skills under the guidance of our professional coaching staff, contracted through Challenger Sports. The focus of the Academy program is on developing individual technical skills and introducing the players to decision making within the game, that lay the groundwork for tactical learning. Our hope is that the new Academy format will bring consistently high-quality training opportunities to our players, that are fun, nurture their love of the game, and tie directly with the club’s overarching philosophy and curriculum while keeping costs down.

The overall goal of the Academy is to groom players for our Select program and allow kids who are keen to progress in soccer the opportunity to be challenged and flourish. That means that Academy practices and games will be much more demanding than in the Development League. The U7/8 - U 9/10 age group are the future of our Select Program - and so we have assigned most of our professional resources to these age groups. We want to nurture, yet challenge and give opportunities to those kids who WANT more - and are prepared to work hard to achieve it.

The Rio Rapids Northern Academy Program is ‘a place of study or training in a special field’. We have three Rio Rapids Northern Academy Programs for boys and girls, U 7/8 and U 9/10. Academies will run at each age bracket provided there is sufficient interest, and it this will depend upon the numbers who register for each program. It is for players with the technical, tactical, physical, and psychological attributes and the potential to be future Select players.  Although it covers the age range U 7/ 8 and U 9/10, there will be different activities and teams at EACH of these ages. The focus of the Academy is individual development and NOT on building a team.

Each Academy player will also be assessed on an on-going basis in their Saturday Development League teams. Our professional coaches will observe players in these games and this information will be passed to their Academy coach to incorporate these development areas into their practices. So Academy players will be continually monitored to chart their growth and development as players.  The U 7/8 - U 9/10 Academy group will play in Development League and play inter-roster games and MAY have the opportunity to play other Academy teams. Play in tournaments will be at the discretion of the Academy coach.

ACADEMY PROGRAM DETAILS

The Academy Program is NOT just 'Development League plus'. We are looking for players, and parents, who are committed to improving their soccer skills and want to work to grow and develop their individual skills. Our objectives for this program are to help players:

  1. Who are committed and motivated to take their soccer abilities to the next level. The key to the Academy is that players and parents must be prepared to commit to the Academy system:
                   - to get access to more dedicated and advanced coaching
                  - play any additional games against regional teams as required.

  2. Develop players and teams able to compete in the Duke City leagues.

  3. Create a foundation of skilled players that could ultimately go on to play college or professional soccer.

The OVERARCHING goal of the Academy is DEVELOPMENT. To provide an environment and resources to allow younger players to learn the game and develop as soccer players, by getting exposed to different situations.

Academy Coaches at each age group will, in conjunction with the Director of Soccer;

  1. Assess the players who are interested in playing in the Academy, and will create a pool who are truly committed to being part of the Academy, and whom they feel that they can work with.

  2. Follow a curriculum laid out by the club to ensure both consistency and a high level of application.

  3. Select teams for each of the additional games that will be played to give players the opportunity to develop and grow.

ACADEMY EXPECTATIONS

OUR EXPECTATIONS OF, AND CRITERIA FOR,  ASSESSING SUITABILITY FOR REMAINING IN THE ACADEMY
During the Spring season, we will be assessing the suitability of players to be in the Academy, and we want to be clear on the criteria that coaches will be used to assess this.

The 4 areas of assessment are:

  1. SKILLS: the ability to read the game (age-appropriate); ability to control the ball; pass and shoot with accuracy.

  2. APPLICATION: the ability to listen and understand the instructions from the coach - either in a drill or in a tactical exercise.

  3. FITNESS: the ability to meet the physical fitness component of the Academy.

  4. DEDICATION: this includes attendance at practices and games, arriving in time to be ready for the start of practices and games (we will have a sign-in sheet to track this); and their overall demeanor during practices and games.

If your son or daughter is not achieving success in these 4 areas at any point (this is a continual assessment), or if we feel that any player is not benefiting from playing Academy, or is holding back the other players in the Academy, we will ask that they no longer participate in the additional Academy sessions.

In order to create an environment where Academy players can thrive and grow our goal is to instill these disciplines early and create a culture around them.  For us, this is a key component of the Academy. If you or your child is unable to meet these expectations then the Academy is not for them.

ACADEMY DETAILS BY AGE

U7/8 ACADEMY
GOAL: Build personal skills as a foundation for future growth.
Academy Limit: 18 boys and 18 girls.

At the U7/8 age, we feel that one Development Practice, One Academy session and a game on Saturday will be plenty of soccer. The Academy sessions will be run by the Rio Rapids Northern Soccer Club staff. It is intense. It focuses upon building the basic/core skills by giving players as many touches on the ball during the session. The average for practice sessions is 100. If at U7/ 8 we can build that confidence with a ball, and start to develop leadership skills on the field - we feel that this will help our players be better as they get older.

U9/10 ACADEMY
GOAL: Further skill development and understanding of game management and positional play.

At the U9 age, we add to the personal skills development with a second Academy session each week with our professional coaching team. The Monday sessions will focus upon personal skills.
